ACTON, Mass. – Wearing an insulin pump may not always feel like a superpower, but Insulet and Marvel are reimagining that experience with a new comic book featuring a hero who lives with Type 1 diabetes.
“At Insulet, we know representation matters—it directly shapes how kids and teens view and adopt diabetes technology,” said Lucas Escobar, Insulet’s director of U.S. consumer marketing. “That’s why we partnered with Marvel, one of the most iconic names in pop culture, to create a character who proves diabetes isn’t a limitation, but part of a bigger, empowering story.”
The comic, Dyasonic: Sound of Strength, follows Omnya, a high schooler learning to navigate her diagnosis. With encouragement from her endocrinologist, she embraces pump therapy and transforms into Dyasonic, a Marvel-style superhero. Her Omnipod® 5—a tubeless, waterproof insulin pump—becomes part of her daily routine and superhero identity.
Escobar noted that the idea had been in the works for years, but it took time to find the right creative partner and authentic approach. While Marvel led development, Insulet offered input on real-world diabetes management to ensure accuracy. What makes the project especially meaningful, Escobar added, is that lead writer Paul Allor also lives with diabetes.
“His lived experience was woven into the narrative,” said Escobar. “It gave Dyasonic’s journey a level of authenticity and heart that resonates deeply.”
This isn’t Insulet’s first cultural crossover. In 2022, the company introduced Omnipod Bay, a diabetes-themed island in Nintendo’s Animal Crossing: New Horizons, allowing players to equip avatars with diabetes devices. More recently, the debut of a Barbie with Type 1 diabetes encouraged kids who once resisted pumps or CGMs to ask parents and doctors about them. The comic carries forward that strategy.
“One of the biggest challenges for kids and teens with Type 1 diabetes is stigma, especially around wearing technology,” Escobar said. “When they see themselves represented in culture, it changes everything.”
